Cheque Presentation 2018
Here is the Student Council presenting the cheque to Ena Hanlon, who represented 'Friends of St. Brigid's Hospice' on Friday morning. €1614.04, which was raised at the Cake Sale is going to this very worthy charity. Thanks again to all who gave so generously on the day.
Well done to our exceptional readers!
Below you'll find our Read-a-thon winners from seniors infants up to 6th Class. They were presented with book vouchers. The overall class winners were Ms. Doyle's 1st Class, who can look forward to some treats next week.
The Student Council hope all students continue their enthusiastic reading long into the summer.

Cake Sale
Today, we raised an amazing €1614.04 for the 'Friends of St. Brigid's Hospice'. We were astounded by the support again this year from staff, family members and the children. Thanks to all those who gave so generously in the form of baked goods, raffle prizes and donations. We were also delighted to see so many parents attend our coffee shop run by Ms. McCarthy & Ms. Roche.
A special mention must go to The Student Council and the 6th Class students for all their hard work. They were so caring towards the younger children as can be seen in many of the photos below. Many even came in very early this morning to help with the set-up and gave up their breaks to keep the show on the road! The day wouldn't have been as successful without their dedication today!

General Knowledge Table Quizzes 2018
Today, the Student Council organised a General Knowledge table quiz in the hall for 1st to 3rd classes and another one for 4th to 6th classes. The juniors had 4 rounds of questions and an additional music round. The seniors had 5 rounds of questions and an additional dingbat round. There was great excitement in the hall all day, especially when the Student Council presented prizes to the winning teams. Well done to all!
(Some of our juniors missed receiving their prizes today and getting into the pictures, but we'll make sure they receive their prizes tomorrow. We had some technical issues with the intercom!)

Litter Picking with Leixlip Tidy Town
Thanks to Berni and The Tidy Town team for taking us out this morning to go litter picking. One of our groups went up as far as Rinawade and the second group collected litter around the triangle and headed up towards the train station and down Accommodation Road. In the triangle we saw the three new benches that were purchased with money from the donation we gave to Leixlip Tidy Town from last year's cake sale! We were delighted to see the plaques dedicated to Scoil Mhuire. We were also thrilled with the support we received from passers-by who were happy to see us working hard to keep the local area tidy. We came back to school with three full bags of rubbish!
Egg Incubator & Chicken Hatchery
Friday - 27th April
It was a sad day today as we said goodbye to Popcorn and April. They visited our classrooms one last time before they had to go back to the farmer. They are now too big for our school.
We thank Pat for all the care he gave the chicks while they were with us in Scoil Mhuire. The Student Council hope all the classes really enjoyed the experience.

Some recent pictures of our chicks
We'll be sorry to see our chicks leave at the end of the week! Their wings have gotten big and both Popcorn and April are very strong now. We can't believe how much they've grown already.
Be sure to come and say goodbye to them before Friday!

Our home was upgraded today! Pat created a new home for us, as we're considering extending our stay. We also visited the rest of the classrooms. It's been an exhausting few days for us. We were even caught sleeping standing up today!

The chicks finally got to explore the school today and went on a visit to some classrooms. April and Popcorn met both 3rd classes, 1st class, one 2nd Class and one Junior Infants. They were tired after all the excitement! They will visit everyone else tomorrow!

Friday Night Update
The chicks are comfortable for the night in their relocated home. The newborn girl chick is moving around the place at present, but 'Lil Quack' is receiving some expert attention in the I.C.U. (Intensive Care Unit) until his legs strengthen. Popcorn is keeping him company.
Friday
Our girl chick arrived this morning! She spent time in the incubator until break, before being moved into the hatchery to meet 'Popcorn' and 'Lil Quack', as they were named yesterday!
'Lil Quack' has a sore leg (common in newborn chicks), so he visited the 'operation table' in Ms. Mescal's office today, to receive some leg support!
We're unsure as to whether there is anything in our fourth egg, but we will wait and see what happens over the weekend.

Bright and early this morning, while we were all sleeping, we welcomed two new visitors to Scoil Mhuire! They have now been moved from the incubator into the larger enclosure. We are very excited for our students to meet them today!
The Student Council will accept suggestions for names for these two chicks until lunchtime! We will make the final decision at our meeting today!

Recommended Reading Lists
With the help of 3rd-6th Class students, the Student Council compiled recommended reading lists for senior students. You'll find them in the 'Pupils' section of the website or by clicking on the link below.
Table Tennis Tournament
Today, the 26th of January, the final of our first ever table tennis league was held. We began by crowning a victor in each of the six senior classes. To everyones surprise, the final itself turned out to be a family event however! Our Student Council Treasurer and his brother from 4th Class were the last two standing after weeks of matches. Following a much anticipated match, our Treasurer was crowned victorious!
We will return to our friendly class rotas for table tennis next week, but we'll hopefully hold another tournament before long again! Well done to the organisers and all involved!

- We have compiled recommended reading lists for all senior classes. These will be available on the website soon.
- We are half way through our end of term table tennis league. We will continue with the remaining classes after Christmas. Well done to our three class winners to date!
- We look forward to some new projects in the New Year!
Meeting with the Board of Management
Yesterday, the 7th of November, we met with the Board of Management. We introduced ourselves and discussed our roles and how we were elected. We informed the Board of our initiatives in place to date and those we hope to implement before the end of the year. At the end of the meeting we had a questioning session, where both parties had the opportunity to converse.
Retirement of Seamus Anderson
The Student Council attended a retirement presentation for Seamus Anderson in the hall with representatives from both Scoil Bhríde and Scoil Eoin Phóil. Seamus was a school traffic warden on Green Lane for the last 4 years. Our Vice Chairperson spoke on behalf of the Student Council and Scoil Mhuire and we presented Seamus with card. A voucher was gifted to Seamus on behalf of the 3 Green Lane schools. Also in attendance were his grandchildren, three of which attend Scoil Mhuire.
Our New Table Tennis Tables
These table tennis tables may be described as one of the best Student Council purchases to date!
They came at a price however, so we thank the P.T.A. for their donation this year, from which we bought both of these tables.
The 6th Class Student Council members supervise these tables at break and lunch and are responsible for their set up and return to the hall each day. To date, both 6th Classes have had their allocated weeks and after mid-term, the 5th, 4th and 3rd Classes will have their chance.
We may establish a small Christmas Table Tennis League for the month of December if the demand is still there.

New Litter Picking Buckets
One of the first requests the Student Council received this year was for new bins to use for litter picking at lunchtime. We approached Mrs. Mescal with this request and we thank her for agreeing to this small, but very worthwhile purchase!
It has made the litter picker's job that little bit easier, now they don't have to re-pick the rubbish as they had to in the past, when it fell through the holes in the old buckets.
We'll hope Scoil Mhuire will be an even cleaner school now that we're well equipped!
Our Student Council 2017-2018
Scoil Mhuire's Student Council has been elected for the year 2017-2018!

Student Council Election Day 2017!
Today, the 26th of September marked Student Council Election Day in Scoil Mhuire. Four 6th Class students were appointed as Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary & Treasurer as recently as yesterday. They went through the process of sending in written applications and were then interviewed by two teachers. It was a real challenge to narrow down the competition to just four!
Following their appointments, we were ready to decide on our class representatives. Classes 3rd to 6th made their way to Ms. O'Mara's room to vote in a secret ballot. Single classes receive two representatives and double classes receive one representative each.
Having numbered their favourite candidates from 1-10 for example, 6th Class tallied all the votes using the quota system and finally we'd filled all our seats on the Student Council and Ms. O'Mara announced the representatives before the day was out.
We look forward to working with new faces this year and can't wait to hear all of their inspiring ideas to make Scoil Mhuire an even nicer place to attend school!

The juniors had 4 rounds of questions and an additional picture round. The seniors had 5 rounds of questions and an additional dingbat round. Some were very testing, as you'll see in one of the photos below. There was great excitement in the hall all day, especially when the Student Council presented prizes to the winning teams. Well done to all!
Cake Sale
Today, the 9th of June, The Student Council and 6th Class held an extremely successful cake sale raising funds for Heart Children Ireland and Leixlip Tidy Towns. After a very quick count this evening, we were shocked and delighted to realise the final amount was over €1,800! Well done to all the children who worked in the hall today and in the corridor on the stalls. All were exceptional and their professionalism was praised by our many visitors to the hall. A massive thank you to everyone who brought treats to the hall very early this morning - staff, parents, grannies and grandads, students, the list goes on. Thanks to everyone who helped out in anyway today - those who provided decorations and t-shirts / bibs during the week, those who helped with the set-up and clear-up in the hall, those who made tea and sold raffle tickets, those who provided raffle prizes and of course all those who attended and gave so generously to two worthy causes!
The adult raffle prizes were announced this evening and a few remain to be collected on Monday. Some prizes from the children's raffle also remain uncollected in school, so there's still hope that you could be in with the chance to win these great prizes on Monday! Don't throw out your raffle tickets just yet!
We look forward to announcing the final total next week! Well done to all involved!

Cheque from Intel
A joint initiative between Scoil Mhuire & Scoil Bhríde was lucky enough to be awarded €5,000 in the Intel Pride of Place Programme. We intend to put this money towards a shared school garden. A lot of work went into drawing up the plans and we were delighted to be awarded such an amount. We look forward to returning to school in September, when we may not recognise the garden! The Student Council are pictured here with the cheque received from Intel. |
End of Year Meeting with Board of Management
We met with representatives of the Board of Management to recap on the first year of a Student Council in Scoil Mhuire. We reminded the Board of all our initiatives this year and informed them of our up-coming projects. We discussed some of the challenges that face Student Councils, as well as the many positives we felt we achieved for the school this year. The Board agreed that we have represented the school exceptionally well to date and they look forward to the council-run activities that remain for this school year. |
American Student Teachers Visit Scoil Mhuire
Today, the 22nd of May, we were visited by a group of student teachers from America, along with their lecturers. They have linked-up with teacher training colleges in Ireland and chose to visit us in Scoil Mhuire to look at some of our classes and to hear about some of our initiatives. They were very interested in the Student Council at primary level and ensured us that they would bring some of our ideas back to America with them.
Goals for Lunchtime Soccer
We have been waiting patiently for the weather to improve to make use of our new goals, bought from P.T.A. money. The Student Council went to Mrs. Mescal with their request on behalf of the students before Christmas and our wish was granted! Thanks to Pat who had to buy and assemble the goals for us. We can't wait for our allocated days on the pitch now!
