🐝World Bee Day - Sat 20th May 🐝
We have been busy learning all about bees over the last few days in preparation for World Bee Day. Classes have learned about the life cycle of a bee, created artwork, labelled diagrams of bees, illustrated pictures and read stories all about bees.
Author Margaret Doherty visited our Junior classes on Thursday and read her book "Everyday Things". She also sang her song: "A Song for the Honeybees" and talked to the classes about bees, what they eat and where they nest. The children really enjoyed her visit and loved hearing her play her ukulele for them. They know she loves bees as she was wearing her yellow bee jumper, bee socks and even bee earings!
Edel from the Heritage Council visited our Senior classes. She gave a very interesting presentation and talked about wild bees and honey bees and how the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan was developed to help them. The children got the chance to see bees in bug pots, the inside of a bee hive, a smoker and a bee suit. The children also got the chance to taste some honey!
At assembly Senior Infants shared facts about bees with the whole school!

Friday - 27th April 2018
It was a sad day today as we said goodbye to Popcorn and April. They visited our classrooms one last time before they had to go back to the farmer. They are now too big for our school.
We thank Pat for all the care he gave the chicks while they were with us in Scoil Mhuire. The Student Council hope all the classes really enjoyed the experience.

Some recent pictures of our chicks
We'll be sorry to see our chicks leave at the end of the week! Their wings have gotten big and both Popcorn and April are very strong now. We can't believe how much they've grown already.
Be sure to come and say goodbye to them before Friday!

Thursday
Our home was upgraded today! Pat created a new home for us, as we're considering extending our stay. We also visited the rest of the classrooms. It's been an exhausting few days for us. We were even caught sleeping standing up today!

The chicks finally got to explore the school today and went on a visit to some classrooms. April and Popcorn met both 3rd classes, 1st class, one 2nd Class and one Junior Infants. They were tired after all the excitement! They will visit everyone else tomorrow!

Friday Night Update
The chicks are comfortable for the night in their relocated home. The newborn girl chick is moving around the place at present, but 'Lil Quack' is receiving some expert attention in the I.C.U. (Intensive Care Unit) until his legs strengthen. Popcorn is keeping him company.
Friday
Our girl chick arrived this morning! She spent time in the incubator until break, before being moved into the hatchery to meet 'Popcorn' and 'Lil Quack', as they were named yesterday!
'Lil Quack' has a sore leg (common in newborn chicks), so he visited the 'operation table' in Ms. Mescal's office today, to receive some leg support!
We're unsure as to whether there is anything in our fourth egg, but we will wait and see what happens over the weekend.

Thursday - Update
Our in-house 'vet', Pat, is taking great care of our chicks. Here he is checking their health and directing them to their feed and water. They've grown in strength over the day.

Thursday
Bright and early this morning, while we were all sleeping, we welcomed two new visitors to Scoil Mhuire! They have now been moved from the incubator into the larger enclosure. We are very excited for our students to meet them today!
The Student Council will accept suggestions for names for these two chicks until lunchtime! We will make the final decision at our meeting today!

Picture 4 shows our after hours set up - lights, camera ... and if only we had a bit more action!

Monday
Our eggs arrived bright and early this morning, the 9th of April!
We expect them to hatch on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. We look forward to watching the chicks hatch out of the eggs. After a day, they can then be moved from the incubator and placed into the larger enclosure.
