Sport's Day 2016
Basketball Against the Teachers
Today we were defeated by a stronger (or taller) team of teachers!
There was only one point in the difference of the final score and some exceptional shots were scored by both sides, including a three pointer from the students. The rest of the school came out to watch the intense game and the excitement was palpable all day in Scoil Mhuire as we awaited the match!

Cake Sale supporting Leixlip Tidy Towns
6th Class held a very successful cake sale on Friday the 17th of June. €1450 was raised for Leixlip Tidy Towns. A big thank you to all parents / guardians, staff and children who donated cakes and treats and supported us so generously on the day. Well done to our raffle winners also, who both happened to be from 2nd Class.
Planting with Mrs. Daly
Mrs. Daly, our Junior and Senior Infant teacher returned to Scoil Mhuire to visit us today. We reminisced about the days when we were 5 years old and only beginning our journey in primary school.
After our trip down memory lane, we went out to the garden and planted some flowers.

International Day
Scoil Mhuire had it's very first 'International Day' today, the 10th of June. 6th Class chose Greece as our country to study and spent the last two weeks learning the Greek Zorba, which we preformed on the stage at assembly. Before assembly, 5 members of our class walked in a parade representing the nationalities in our school. The rest of us cheered on our classmates and enjoyed the atmosphere. We also got to sample some American food thanks to Mrs. Tebbe and learned about Nigeria with Mrs. Onyejkwe.

6th Class Basketball League
The final of the 6th Class Basketball League was played today, the 25th of May. It was a disappointing loss for Scoil Mhuire, having won all of our previous matches. Scoil Bhríde were victorious, after an exceptional display of basketball and received a plaque for their efforts. Well done Scoil Bhríde!
Our Scoil Mhuire team demonstrated excellent skill and team work throughout the league and their dedication at training all year must be praised.
There's still the very competitive teachers versus students match in June to look forward to!

6th Class donation to Temple Street Children's Hospital
Every year after Confirmation, 6th Class choose a charity to make a donation to. This year, after much discussion and a class vote, we picked 'Temple Street Children's Hospital' as our very worthy recipient. We decided it would be nice to give back to children our own age, who may not be as well as we are.
When 'Temple Street' received our cheque, they very kindly offered to visit and tell us how our money would be put to great use. We heard that the money we donated would aid the general upkeep of the hospital, the running of very expensive machines, the purchase of resources and would especially help the neurological and renal units in the hospital. We were fortunate that Brian who is a medic, but also fundraises for 'Temple Street', also brought along a 'Bumbleance' for us to explore. There are only two Bumbleances in the whole of Ireland and they are usually very busy travelling the country and transporting very sick children. We say a big thank you to Brian and Tommy for opening our eyes to the great work that goes on in 'Temple Street' and for giving us the rare opportunity to see a Bumbleance up close. |

Census Results
School Census
April 22nd became 'School Census Day' in Scoil Mhuire!
6th Class acted as enumerators and distributed the census to the various classes from Junior Infants to 6th Class. Children were asked about their nationalities, the languages they speak, how they travel to school and much more. Check back in next week when the results are graphed and displayed! |
On Thursday, a child from each class had the responsibility of signing to say their class received their census forms. |
We gave classes Junior Infants to 1st a helping hand filling in their forms.

Back in Room 13, it was now time to collate the results. |
1916 Freedom Bus Tour
6th Class had a fantastic day out in Dublin on the 20th of April on the 1916 Freedom Bus Tour. To further enhance our study of 1916 and to reward the students for their hard work and great attitudes all year, this trip was very kindly subsidised by the Board of Management. Mr. Gantly, Mr. McCormack and Mr. Carey from the Board of Management even accompanied us on our trip, along with Ms. O'Sullivan and of course Ms. O'Mara, Ms. McAuliffe and Ms. Corduff.
We began our day, by walking to Leixlip Louisa Bridge to get the train to Pearse Station. When we arrived at Pearse, we made our way around the corner to Merrion Square, where our bus and tour guide Ken were awaiting us. He entertained us with detailed stories of the happenings in Dublin at the time of 1916 and pointed out all the major sights including, the G.P.O., Jacob's Biscuit Factory, Dublin Castle, Stephen's Green, Trinity College and the spot where O'Farrell and Pearse finally surrendered to end the Rising. We observed houses, weaponry and uniforms from the time of 1916 and even spotted some of the bullet marks which remain on buildings, as a reminder of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Film-Book Club
For the last few months, 6th Class have been reading and responding to the novel 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl. As part of the film-book club, Leixlip Library then invited us up to watch the film version of 'Matilda'.
We also couldn't pass up the opportunity to pose for a photo on the return walk to school!

Programming with iPads
Today, the 8th of April, Gavin from 'Get Smart Media' came to visit us in 6th Class. He introduced us to the app 'Hopscotch' and taught us the basics of programming or coding on iPads. Our final aim was to create an interactive drawing, but prior to that we had many challenges. Some of the challenges were to create a 'sprite' or character, to make our sprite move to the left, right, up and down by tilting the iPad or by a touch and to make the sprite move in a series of shapes. Little did we know, that learning about angles and the x-axis and y-axis in Maths would prove to be so useful when writing commands for a programme!
6th Class with our new Tri-Colour and a Proclamation from the 1920's
Lá an Fhorógra - Proclamation Day 2016
The 15th of March 2016 or Proclamation Day as it became known this year, celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.
6th Class have spent all year studying 1916 in detail. We've learnt various song such as, Óro Sé Do Bheatha 'Bhaile, Amhrán na bhFiann, The Dawning of the Day & The Foggy Dew, which we performed at the ceremony on the day. We even wrote our own version of the Proclamation, where we examined our hopes and thoughts for Ireland in another 100 years. On Proclamation Day, Scoil Mhuire, like every school in the country, raised the Irish tri-colour. We received this flag from the Defence Forces back in October. Here is a picture of us under the tri-colour on Proclamation Day. |

School Elections
6th Class held their own election on the 24th of February in the lead-up to last Friday's General Election. We formed various political parties and great thought went into choosing our head candidate, party name, party logo and of course our campaign promises. Much research was carried out on the yard, as we investigated the political interests of the 4th and 5th classes, before they decided our political futures!
