Litter-picking with Leixlip's Tidy Towns committee for Green Schools
On Thursday March 23rd, 5th Class spent an hour litter-picking with Leixlip's Tidy Towns committee. We were astounded by the amount of rubbish we found. We now realise that even one hour can help our environment so much. Every bit of litter collected counts, whether big or small. Thank you to Ms. Dowling for allowing our class to help make our school more green, and thank you also to her, Anne and Ms. Keating for accompanying us.

Lá Glas and Céilí dancing
Bhain Rang 5 an-taitneamh as Seachtain na Gaeilge. D'fhoghlaimaíomar amhráin nua chun iad a thaispeáint don scoil go léir. Bhíomar ag léamh triad an-chuid seanfhocail chun iad a phlé sa Bhéarla. Chaitheamar éadaí glasa chun céiliúradh a dhéanamh ar conas a bheith Éireannach freisin. An rud is mó ar mhaith le Rang 5 ná a bheith ag cleachtadh 'An Dreoilín' don chéilí. Bhíomar ar mhuin na muice tar éis seachtaine den scoth!
Happy Mother's Day from 5th Class!
Engineering Week 2023
While our classmates were doing a fantastic job representing us at the FAI Soccer Blitz, 5th and 6th Class were visited by Claire from Leixlip Library who provided us with a really fun marble run workshop. Here we worked in teams to see who could develop the slowest marble run. It was really interesting for all involved.

GREEN SCHOOLS: Action Day
This year, Scoil Mhuire is looking at marine life as part of Green Schools. On Action Day, 5th Class discussed what we can do to protect our marine wildlife and plant life, as well as keeping our oceans clean.
We engaged in a really interesting quiz based on the topic, the results were extremely close, and we designed beautiful posters to raise awareness on the topic also.

INTEL 'MINI SCIENTIST' COMPETITION 2022
A massive congratulations is in order for 5th Class who spent the first eight weeks of the school year preparing for the Intel 'Mini Scientist' Competition 2022. This competition involves groups or individual senior primary school students investigating a scientific question and presenting their findings through a written booklet and oral presentation. Unlike the past few years on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were visited by judge, Patrizia Odierna, from Intel who chose one project to represent Scoil Mhuire in the regional finals of the competition in January. She highly commended the calibre and hard work that went into all the projects. She was highly impressed by the topics investigated also. As a teacher, I am so proud of each student's work and delighted to have been part of the process. The hard work and preparation were most definitely worthwhile.
Topics investigated include how chewing gum affects concentration, crystals, what car type is best to buy, gravity, black holes, oobleck, differences between dogs and humans, the effect of coconut oil on hair growth, which milk goes off quickest, the effect caffeine has on sports performance and whether blue light glasses should be used in primary schools.
The winning project, 'Crystals', will go forward to the regional finals.
In joint second place were the projects 'Does caffeine affect sports performance?' and 'Gravity'.
Congratulations and well done to all in 5th Class. :) Comhghairdeachas libh go léir! :)
