May the Road Rise to Meet You
Here is an early version of the hymn 'May the Road Rise to Meet You' from one of our first practices. I received a few requests for this very apt song sung by the two classes as the final hymn at the Graduation Mass.

Congratulations Class of 2018!
Today marked the end of eight great years most of these students spent growing and learning in Scoil Mhuire. We said goodbye to a fantastic bunch of 6th Class students, who will be greatly missed. They were thanked today for their exceptional leadership, maturity, cooperation and enthusiasm always. We look forward to hearing wonderful things about them as the continue their journey through secondary school. Thank you to all the parents for your fantastic support all year and to the students for being a brilliant bunch to teach and to get to know.
Enjoy the well deserved break! It has been a great year!

Final Week of School
We've had a fantastic final week in Scoil Mhuire. Below you will get an insight into our water balloon fight, our walk to The Wonderful Barn & games in the G.A.A. and the 6th Class basketball game against the teachers.
The students won the match by a few baskets to end their unbelievable season of sport. The teachers suffered with the heat it has to be said, but the students showed no sign of fatigue. Thanks to our past student Eimear Harrington for putting her loyalties aside and reffing the match. She led her own 6th Class team to victory many times while in school!

Kindness Stones
Mr. Lynch invited us to leave our memory on the Scoil Mhuire garden. We painted stones and added quotes to inspire others. These will be placed in a soon to be created rockery.
6th Class School Tour
We all had a fantastic time in Lilliput Adventure Centre today for our last ever school tour in Scoil Mhuire. We began the morning with a climbing wall, aeroball and fun games, followed by some bog jumping and canoeing, orienteering and a capture the flag activity. It was definitely a day to remember!
It's been a busy week!
Between the Green Lane awards where we received Under 11, Under 13 and Basketball trophies and medals, fun races on the grass, Read-a-thon winners, Izak 9, the presentation of the Cake Sale cheque to the Hospice and Write-a-Book prize giving, it's been a jam-packed week.
Of course the highlight of the week has to have been Graduation, although teacher has no photo evidence of this!

Soccer League Final
For the second year in a row, our final resulted in a penalty shoot-out. P.S.G. were crowned victorious by two penalties, following the original 1-1 score. They were awarded their medals by today's referee. Well done to all the players who took part in the league, especially today's opponents, Arsenal.
Finally after weeks of waiting, we have some sign of life! We didn't think it was going to happen ... but we may just yet have a sunflower before the end of June!
Olympic Torch Run
This morning we cheered on the Special Olympics torch as it arrived into our neighbours in Scoil Eoin Phóil. One of our past students took the lead as the torch came up Green Lane. We wish the athletes the best of luck this weekend in their competitions.
Cheque donation to Jack and Jill Foundation
A great day was had at Sports Day 2018!
Under 13 Success!
Well done to the whole Under 13 team, but especially our 6th Class students who represented Scoil Mhuire for the final time. We put in a tremendous performance against a Scoil Eoin Phóil team in the final. It was a fantastic end to our very successful year in sport! Congrats to all involved!
Pat joins our class for an end of year picture!
Litter Picking with Leixlip Tidy Town
Thanks to Berni and The Tidy Town team for taking us out this morning to go litter picking. One of our groups went up as far as Rinawade and the second group collected litter around the triangle and headed up towards the train station and down Accommodation Road. In the triangle we saw the three new benches that were purchased with money from the donation we gave to Leixlip Tidy Town from last year's cake sale! We were delighted to see the plaques dedicated to Scoil Mhuire. We were also thrilled with the support we received from passers-by who were happy to see us working hard to keep the local area tidy. We came back to school with three full bags of rubbish!
Coláiste Chiaráin Visit
Thanks to Coláiste Chiaráin and the Gluais Team for inviting us up to see what will be the destination for most of us in September. We received a fantastic tour from two of the 5th Years and a card to wish us well from the Leaving Certs who were once in Scoil Mhuire. We're really looking forward to secondary school now, even if Ms. O'Mara likes to remind us that we will miss Scoil Mhuire when we are gone!
6th Class Soccer in the Sun
The two 6th Classes faced each other in a game of soccer for the afternoon. Things weren't looking great for Ms. O'Mara's class to begin with, but we came back to score two great goals, to slightly redeem things. Hopefully, we'll continue to pair up with Ms. O'Driscoll's Class for more fun and games over the final 6 weeks of school!
Today was all about sport in 6th Class!
We began the day with our basketball final against a great Scoil Bhríde team. We had been successful in all our matches up to this point, so the pressure was really on to continue this winning run. After a very intense, challenging match, we were victorious with only two baskets to spare.
Our team has been superb, attending training every 2nd Wednesday after school. Every player has shown their determination all year and they all showed amazing skill in every match. No doubt, some will go on to play basketball for many years to come!
Hopefully we'll have a few more games between the two 6th classes before the end of the year and maybe a game against the teachers, if Ms. O'Mara can find a teacher's team brave enough to face the 6th Class!
Well done to all members of the team! You were fantastic!

Our afternoon was then spent at the Green Lane Running Event over on the Scoil Bhríde pitch. Ten students from 6th class represented Scoil Mhuire and likewise in 4th & 5th. The cross-country run was organised to raise money to send some of our past pupils to the Special Olympics Ireland event in June.
6th class ran a distance of 1km, which was challenging, but we all did fantastic. We even left with a silver medal! Well done to our own student! One of our 4th Class students was also awarded a bronze medal in his 300m race. Numerous raffle prizes were awarded after the race also. One of our own students won a great hamper and another won a Liffey Valley voucher. Thanks to the organisers for a great afternoon of fundraising and fun! |
Today both classes visited the library to watch the film 'Holes' as part of the 'Film / Book Club'.
Active Week - Friday
Active Week concluded today with our last 'Wake Up,Shake Up', GAA with Coach Michael and rounders against the teachers. It's fair to say the children faired better than the teachers, with a winning score of 25-13 after the rounders. The teachers have set all their hopes on defending the basketball title at the end of the year now, after the defeat today! Even if the 6th Class team think they have the win in the bag already!
Thanks to Ms. Doyle & Ms. O'Grady for organising a great week!

Marathon Monday
Each class had to run a marathon on the Monday of Active Schools Week. A marathon is 252 laps of the large yard. As we have a small class, each person in our class had to run 15 laps each. Some did extra, which meant that at the end of the session, we had run a total of 52.6Km. This is over 10Km more than a marathon. We look forward to continuing the activity for the rest of the week!
Intercultural Day 2018
This year both 6th classes studied New Zealand and the Maoris. We sang a song from the Disney film 'Moana' which can be heard if you click on the link below. The videos show the intercultural parade as it entered the hall. You can see the colours and costumes from all the countries represented in our school.
Gideon's mom teaches us a clapping game in the 2nd video. We thank her for teaching us about Africa and providing us with some African outfits to try on. Ava's aunt also paid us a visit to talk about the U.S.A., which we will be studying in a few weeks. She showed us some lacrosse and baseball equipment and baked us some chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls. Thanks to all who contributed to our Intercultural Day this year.

We're studying circuits in Science
We can make a series and parallel circuit. Next week we will make a circuit quiz.
Popcorn and April visit Room 13!
GOAL Workshop
Today we had a lovely visit from Mura from GOAL. She talked to us about Ethiopia and the drought and hunger they experience there. It was a very enjoyable morning full of drama activities. As we held our Jersey Day in October and as a result of completing the workshop, we are now a GOAL Humanitarian School.
Sheila O'Hora Art Competition
One of our classmates was crowned the winner of the 'Sheila O'Hora Art Competition' this year. Her painting was entitled 'Box of Memories'. Well done to all the prize winners.
Click here to see the progress of the eggs on the Student Council page!
Well done to our students who had full attendance for the half term before the Easter holidays!
We still have four students who have missed no days at all this year! Let's continue the efforts for our last term in primary school!

The Big Egg Drop
Ms. O'Mara set us a challenge on the Thursday before the holidays to create a protective case for an egg. We worked in groups of 3's and 4's, accepted the challenge enthusiastically and set about planning our designs. Friday came, and with some ammunition from home, we returned to our groups to form our contraptions. We used bottles, bubble wrap, sellotape, cotton wool, plastic bags, cushions and even a pencil case, to try and guard our delicate object.
With the help of Pat on the roof, we were left with 3 survivors, but sadly 2 casualties. |
Class Debating
Today, we held our first class debate. Our motion was 'The Marian and local shops should be removed and a supermarket built in their place'. We began by breaking the class in to two halves and we gathered our ideas for both sides of the argument. We then selected our speakers, a Chairperson and our adjudicators. The standard was so high, either side could have been crowned victorious! Ms. O'Mara was delighted the adjudicators had the final decision to make and not her! In the end, the opposing team were announced as the winners. It was such a success, we will definitely be debating again soon!
Lá Glas
Today was our Lá Glas to conclude Seachtain na Gaeilge. We all wore green for the day and we enjoyed the annual céilí with Ms. O'Sullivan. We were gifted some photo props for St. Patrick's Day also, which we had fun with.
We're still on the hunt for old photos!
I have received some 'gems' over the past few weeks of our class throughout the years! Thanks to all who have shared! If there are any more in the archives, we'd love to see them. Particularly of the boys, the girls have been more enthusiastic at sharing!
Printing in Art
We began by creating a design and then carved this design into a styrofoam sheet. We rolled paint onto the sheet and prepared to print our creations!
Our Confirmation Photo
G.A.A. Skills
We met Coach Michael for the first time on Friday. We look forward to a few more active sessions of G.A.A. skills in the coming weeks.
Lá na Gaeilge
Bhí ár gcéad 'Lá na Gaeilge' againn ar an 9ú lá de Mhárta. Bhí gach duine ag caint agus ag spraoi as Gaeilge don lá ar fad. Rinne rang a sé sár iarracht! Ar maidin bhí an 'Tráth na gCeist' againn. Tháinig rang a trí go dtí rang a sé le chéile sa halla. Tá na buateoirí le feiceáil anseo. Tar éis an tráth na gceist, bhí sé in am dul go dtí tionól. Rinne gach rang amhrán nó dán. D'fhoghlaim ár rang an dán 'Ag Moladh Leabhar' agus bhíomar go hiontach!
6th Class Heading Down Memory Lane
We have begun the hunt for photos of ourselves in the younger classes and we were delighted when one of our classmates got us off to a fantastic start today! We spent time examining (and laughing at) the calendar photos in detail this morning.
Today I received a letter from Leixlip Parish ...
The letter I received commended one of our students for this fantastic piece of writing that most of us had been unaware of. During the Confirmation preparation programme, 'You Shall Be My Witness', the children were asked to write their own creed in response to the Nicene Creed. Her leaders were so impressed, they brought it to the attention of Ella Doran and Fr. John. Hopefully we'll hear this prayer being read aloud in the future.
Attendance - January to Mid-Term
A little later than usual, but here are the 12 students from our class with full attendance from January to the middle of February. As the reward, one of these lucky students received a Homework Pass to encourage their continued effort to attend school everyday.
Our class total was lower this time at 92.3% attendance. Hopefully we'll try and score a little better for the current half-term, in the lead up to Easter.
Four of our classmates have not missed a single day this year! Keep it up girls!

Helix Performance
Our 6th and our 4th Class students preformed exceptionally well today, the 25th of February at the Helix. We were invited by Mr. Gaskin to sing at the 30th anniversary of Bailieborough Music School. We sung with classes from Scoil Eoin Phóil and Scoil Bhríde. As always, we did ourselves and the school proud!

Confirmation Photographs
A huge well done to all the children who made their Confirmation yesterday. They did themselves, the school and their families proud and made it a fantastic celebration for all involved. All their hard work over the last few months and especially weeks, definitely paid off! A big thanks to the children who didn't make their Confirmation, but supported us in our preparation also.
Below, you will find some pictures of us in our finery! (The boys were a little camera shy!)
Confirmation Week
We are very excited in 6th Class to be making our Confirmation tomorrow, the 22nd of February. Bishop Field will be joining us, along with the priests of the parish, to celebrate the sacrament with us. We have been preparing for months and look forward to receiving the Holy Spirit tomorrow in the company of our classmates, families and the parish community. We look forward to seeing you in the Church between 10:30 and 10:40. |

Friendship Week
Today we linked up with Ms. Doyle and her 2nd Class to help them with their art for Friendship Week and Valentine's Day. We all paired off with a buddy and even gifted them a friendship band. We look forward to meeting them again later in the week for some more fun activities.
Laudate Festival 2018
A huge well done to our fantastic 6th Class students who sang during Catholic Schools Week at Our Lady of Victories Church for the Laudate Festival 2018. They did Scoil Mhuire proud with their singing abilities and also their exceptional behaviour. It was a lovely evening of song and reflection. They've had some great performances already this year and no doubt there'll be more to come!
Credit Union Quiz
The 29th of January marked the local round of the Credit Union Quiz. Seven representatives for our own class took part in the quiz and four of those were awarded prizes as seen below.
Our teams took 2nd and 3rd places in the Senior Section and 2nd place in the Junior Section. A huge well done to all those who took part! We were delighted at how well they did representing their school!

Animal Adaptations Creations!
Today, we explored animal adaptations, including the physical and behavioural ones that animals demonstrate as they explore our world. We then worked in groups to create our own animals and imagined the adaptations they'd achieve to survive in their chosen habitat. After a quick group briefing, a labelled diagram and a class presentation, the 'Slorwhal' was crowned victorious!
Merry Christmas from Room 13
As we break for the Christmas holidays, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a great start to the new year! We've had a busy first term, but have excelled as leaders in 6th Class. We've spent time preparing for our Confirmation, our Laudate performance, the Carol Service & our Christmas Play. We've worked hard with our school work, homework and presented some exceptional projects. We've completed many jobs around the school and have been praised for our helpfulness and cooperation.
We look forward to the following next term:
Pre-Confirmation Mass on January 20th @ 6:00p.m.
Our Laudate performance on the 30th of January in Our Lady of Victories Church, Ballymun Road @ 7:00p.m. - 8:15p.m.
Many of us will complete our Entrance Exam on the 3rd of February.
We will celebrate our Confirmation on the 22nd of February @ 11:00.

Attendance - November & December
Today we were crowned the class with the best attendance in the whole school! All 14 of us pictured here have not missed a day of school during November and December. Our class attendance percentage total was up almost 2% to 97.2%. Ms. O'Mara was so impressed and in the spirit of Christmas, she raffled off two homework passes as rewards!
Final Products - Engineering Christmas Trees
Working as engineers to create Christmas Trees
Today we became engineers and constructed Christmas trees using straws and blue tack. We didn't get them quite finished, so we'll have to complete our projects tomorrow.
The Renaissance
We have been studying the writers, sculptors and artists of the Renaissance. Some of these Renaissance men include Johann Gutenberg, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. The Renaissance happened in Europe, centred around Italy, between the 1400's and 1600's. It was the rebirth of old Greek and Roman ideas. An exceptional drawing of Johann Gutenberg, creator of the printing press, by one of our students. |
A cold stroll to the library in December!
Stardome Planetarium
Today we visited the library for a presentation to discover the wonders of the night sky. We entered a portable planetarium, as can be seen in the pictures below and discussed various stars, planets, galaxies and much more! We asked some thought provoking questions and found the whole experience very interesting.

Science - Filtration
Today, we studied filtration in Science. We began by making a 'mucky' mixture. We then created a filter using a funnel, filter paper, cotton wool and the stones and sand from the mixture itself, which also aided the filtration process. The result was that the water, which eventually made its way through the funnel, was substantially cleaner than our initial mixture. Yet, without any chemicals to further clean the water, we didn't dare taste it!
Our Class Mural
Today we completed our class mural, which represents a set of wings.
Green Lane Lunchtime League
Well done to the Limerick team who were today victorious in the Boys Under 11 Lunchtime League organised by Mr. Brangan. We had eight representatives from Scoil Mhuire and two from our own class. Well done boys!
An insight into our Laudate Repertoire
At our Confirmation Commitment Mass on Saturday night, both 6th Classes had the opportunity to duet with the Leixlip Gospel Choir. Here is a taste of the performance from our practice together on Thursday night.
Games in the Yard
To finish off this half-term which was full of hard work and excellent leadership from 6th Class, we treated ourselves to some games in the yard this afternoon. We've purchased great games for the senior yard this year thanks to the P.T.A. Our chess experts got to test out the new magnetic chess board on its first outing!
Well done to all in Room 13 for their excellent start to the year. Enjoy the well deserved break! 🎃

🎃👻 Halloween! 🎃👻
Attendance - September & October
A big well done to our 12 students who have not missed a single day of school since the beginning of the year!
The attendance percentage for our class for this half-term was 95.3%. This leaves a little room for improvement however. Hopefully we'll continue to try hard for November & December to raise this number.
Our 12 students pictured here went into a raffle for a Homework Pass, as a reward for their fantastic attendance! Keep it up! :)
Examination of Yeast
We have been studying 'Fungi' over the past few weeks. We began by examining mushrooms and made spore prints. However, having left the mushrooms for a few days longer than expected after Storm Ophelia, no one would want to see any pictures of this study. Instead, we added this fungus (the mushrooms) to more fungus found in the compost bin!
Today, we explored yeast, another fungus. We mixed a teaspoon of yeast, a teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of water together in a bottle. This was then covered with a balloon. As time passed this afternoon, we particularly saw the results with the white balloon as seen in the pictures. We discovered we had created Carbon Dioxide using our mixture. This is seen also when baking bread, yeast causes the mixture to rise. We look forward to seeing if there's any further changes in the morning.

Jersey Day
Today was 'Jersey Day' in aid of GOAL. We raised some money for charity and had fun in the process! We all had the opportunity to stand up in assembly when our jersey was called.
Busy at Work in the School Garden
Thanks to Mrs. Daly, who guided us in our work with the new school garden today. We prepared the beds for the infants and 1st class and we also attempted to replant some strawberries, using last years shoots. We're hoping they'll be successful! Mrs. Daly also reminded us to keep an eye on the bed and to visit the garden to pull the weeds regularly.
Native Americans
We wrote 'Diamante Poems' to conclude our study of the Native Americans.
Some of our recent displays!
A glimpse into what taking a picture in 6th Class can turn into!
Student Council Elections
Our class coordinated the Student Council elections today, the 26th of September. The elections were to appoint students as class representatives to the council for classes 3rd to 6th.
First, students had to mark their name off the voting register, before receiving their ballot paper to vote.
That was only the beginning of the process, as 6th Class then had to tally the results using the quota system, as they do in elections in Ireland. We used the 'election day turn out' and the number of seats available to each class to help us calculate each quota. We redistributed the votes from the lowest candidates, in order for the highest candidates to reach their quotas.
It was a very successful day all round and it was commented that we ran an exceptionally organised polling station!

Measuring our reactions in Science
We'll spend this fortnight learning about the brain. We will look at how the brain controls our reactions and memory. We'll also examine the different sections in the brain and how to take care of our brain.
