We had an extremely difficult decision to make, but after much debate the following posters were chosen. We chose a winner from each class 4th-6th and an overall winner, a poster by a 6th Class student of 4 friends 'ag fás agus ag foghlam le chéile'. A huge thank you to everyone who entered our competition.

Goodbye Mrs. Murphy
On the 5th of April representatives from the Student Council presented Mrs. Murphy with flowers, cards and a gift voucher to purchase some jewellery which she loves, on behalf of all the students in the school. We were very sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Murphy after 38 years of service in Scoil Mhuire. We hope she enjoys her retirement.
American Students Visit Scoil Mhuire
Today, the 20th of March, we were visited by a group of college students from America. They have linked-up with various colleges in Ireland and chose to visit us in Scoil Mhuire to look at some of our classes and to hear about some of our initiatives. They were very interested in the Student Council at primary level.
Meeting with the Board of Management
We finished term one by meeting the Board of Management of Scoil Mhuire. We sat down for a discussion together in the staffroom. We detailed our work to date this year and our hopes for the year to come. We also discussed the overall running of the school by the various management bodies.

We hope to further expand our issue for term 2. Well done to the 6th Class committee members who volunteered to type the document up over the last few weeks.
We hope to receive a broad range of documents for our issue in the new year. If you have any poems, articles, stories or quizzes, please send them to Room 13. We hope you all enjoy Issue 1 of the Scoil Mhuire Times.

Student Council Elections 2018
Yesterday, the 19th of September marked Student Council Election Day in Scoil Mhuire. Four 6th Class students were appointed as Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary & Treasurer as recently as last week. They went through the process of sending in written applications and were then interviewed by two teachers. It was a real challenge to narrow down the competition to just four!
Following their appointments, we were ready to decide on our class representatives. Classes 3rd to 6th made their way to Ms. O'Mara's room to vote in a secret ballot. Single classes receive two representatives and double classes receive one representative each.
Having numbered their favourite candidates from 1-10 for example, 6th Class tallied all the votes using the quota system and finally we'd filled all our seats on the Student Council and Ms. O'Mara announced the representatives before the day was out.
We look forward to working with new faces this year and can't wait to hear all of their inspiring ideas to make Scoil Mhuire an even nicer place to attend school!

Some Recent Student Council Initiatives
The Student Council have continued with their hard work and implemented some new initiatives in the yard. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, two members of the Student Council monitor the Junior Yard and ensure everyone has a friend to play with. We called this idea 'Cara sa Chlós' or 'Friend in the Yard' and it has been working really well. We can be identified in the yard by our yellow arm bands.
Our next project was to provide ball games, skipping ropes and throwing games for the junior children. Again on Monday, Wednesday & Friday, two different members supervise this cordoned off section of the yard. The junior children look forward to their day enthusiastically!

Some Student Council Updates - December
The Student Council have had a very successful first term in office in Scoil Mhuire. Here is a brief run-down of what we have been up to ...
- We've had meetings every fortnight with the teacher representative to discuss ways to further improve Scoil Mhuire from the student's perspective.
- We wrote a letter to Ms. Mescal and the staff outlining some of our ideas and a group of us even sat down for a meeting with Ms. Mescal to solve some logistical issues, involving these suggestions.
- For Friendship Week this year, we will share the yard! We are very excited about this prospect. As always during this week, a junior class will be paired with a senior class for activities such as P.E., art, reading and so on. Now we will also get to play with our new friends on the yard.
- We approached Ms. Mescal with a request for a set of goals to use at lunchtime. She kindly agreed to the purchase of these using money donated to the school by the P.T.A. A big thank you to Ms. Mescal and the P.T.A.! We look forward to making use of them in the new year when the weather improves.
- The Student Council surveyed the mainstream teachers from 1st Class up and asked them would they introduce 'issue boxes' and extra drama in Irish into their classrooms. The results were very much in favour of such initiatives and we thank the teachers for their continued support of the Student Council.
- We have many other ideas which we are working on at present and hope they can be implemented before the year is out.

Our New Student Council After Our First Meeting
Student Council Elections!
Wednesday the 12th of October became Student Council Election Day in Scoil Mhuire. Students from 3rd Class to 6th Class were invited to cast their votes in room 13. Any student who wished to put themselves forward for election and get their name on the ballot paper, was asked to hand a nomination form to Ms. O'Mara before the previous Friday. Each nomination form had to be supported by an adult and another student of Scoil Mhuire.
6th Class also had the opportunity to put themselves forward for the positions of Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary & Treasurer. The staff had a very difficult decision to make in appointing students to these roles and were overwhelmed with the exceptional written applications received. The four positions were finally filled after interviews with the candidates. As always, well done to all students who put themselves forward for such roles in Scoil Mhuire. Keep an eye on the website to see what the Student Council gets up to during their first term in office!
