Last Day in 6th!
This morning we said goodbye to a fantastic 6th class bunch. Ms. O'Mara will definitely miss them around the school. They've worked hard all year and became outstanding leaders and young people in general. Many laughs were shared and memories made!
Enjoy the well deserved rest and best of luck as you move on to the various secondary schools.
Hopefully you'll pay us a visit in Scoil Mhuire every now and again!

Cake Sale 2019
The Student Council and 6th Class organised an exceptional cake sale today. €2,000 was raised for Féileacáin and The Peter McVerry Trust. A gigantic total! A huge thanks to all the families and staff who supported the day by donating raffle prizes, supplying cakes and treats, coming to spend time in our café and buying treats on the day. The Student Council will pass on the cheques to the charities next week. Thank you for the incredible support.
Gairdín Uí Dhálaigh
Today we blessed our shared school garden. 6th Class chose to donate money to purchase a bench in honour of Mrs. Nora Daly. We are so lucky to have a mural painted in her honour depicting some of her favourite vegetables, the church and the Wonderful Barn. We had a lovely ceremony with staff from Scoil Mhuire and Scoil Bhríde, retirees from both schools, members of the local community and Mrs. Daly's family in attendance.

Visit to Coláiste Chiaráin
This morning the Gluais Team welcomed us to Coláiste Chiaráin for a tour of the school. We met Mr. Sweeney, our Year Head Mr. Broderick and many other teachers. We saw our 1st year area and the numerous classrooms and facilities Coláiste Chiaráin has to offer. We also met many past students of Scoil Mhuire.
Thank you to the Gluais Team for the fantastic welcome, we didn't want to leave!

Class Debates
We finished off the term with two class debates. Our motions were 'Video games cause aggression in children' and 'Trump should build a wall between Mexico and the U.S.A.' Teams opposed and proposed the motions. Our Chairperson kept everything running smoothly and our two sets of adjudicators selected the winning teams, along with a best speaker from the remaining team. A huge well done to all the speakers.
The Big Egg Drop
Ms. O'Mara set us a challenge to create a protective case for an egg. We worked in groups of 3s and 4s, accepted the challenge enthusiastically and set about planning our designs. With some ammunition from home, we returned to our groups to form our contraptions. We used bubble wrap, sellotape, cotton wool, plastic bags, slime, teddies, cushions and much more, to try and guard our delicate object.
With the help of Pat on the roof, we were left with no casualties this year! A first for any of Ms. O'Mara's classes! All survived!

World Book Day
Today we celebrated World Book Day in Scoil Mhuire. We came to school dressed as some of our favourite book characters. We began the morning by making a trip to the school library for some reading time. After lunch we visited the Book Fair organised by the P.T.A. We also continue to read our class novel 'Wonder' by R. J. Palacio.
More Confirmation Photos ...
Posing in our finery on photo day!
Confirmation
A huge well done to all the children who made their Confirmation on Wednesday. They did themselves, the school and their families proud and made it a fantastic celebration for all involved. All their hard work over the last few months and especially weeks, definitely paid off! A big thanks to the children who didn't make their Confirmation, but supported us in our preparation also.

Friendship Week in Room 13
We began by picking a secret friend to show kindness to for the week. Ms. O'Mara forgot to put her name in the box, but she has been assured by the class that she'll be overwhelmed with kindness towards her!!! We hope to make something for our secret friends later in the week.
We then broke into two halves and cooperated to form a friendship heart.

We've had a fantastic term in 6th Class, Ms. O'Mara can't praise us highly enough! We head into a busy term after Christmas as we prepare for our Confirmation on the 27th of February, along with many other exciting events which are ahead of us in 6th Class.

Scoil Uí Dhálaigh Running Event
Well done to the children from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class who represented Scoil Mhuire at Scoil Uí Dhálaigh's running event. Our own class secured two third place individual medals! The junior girls' team and the senior boys' team also received medals for their team results. All the participants enjoyed this great annual event.
Under 11s Football
Our under 11s team gave their all today in the final of the after school league against Scoil Uí Dhálaigh. Unfortunately it wasn't our day, but the boys must be commended for their dedication and determination in such awful conditions. Our three 6th Class team members showed fantastic leadership as always. We also had great support from a selection of 3rd to 6th class children in the stand. We look forward to the under 13 league beginning after Christmas.
Well done to the Under 11s team and to Mr. Lynch and Mr. Coughlan for a wonderful season and on getting to the final. Regardless of the result, the team did Scoil Mhuire proud today!

The Three Tenors Performance
Last year, Scoil Mhuire received an invite to join The Three Tenors in concert in Our Lady's Nativity Church. We have been practising since September and on the 16th of November, it was finally our time to shine after weeks of hard work and dedication! The 5th and 6th Class choir sang 'On Top of the World' and also accompanied the Tenors for 'Home from the Sea'. Ms. O'Mara, Ms. O'Donnell and Mrs. Mescal couldn't have been prouder of their appearance on the night! Not only did they sing their hearts out, but their overall presence in the church for the whole night was commended by the many parents, grandparents, Board of Management members and Leixlip parishioners who came over to praise the choir at the end of the night. A big thank you to Laura O'Neill who accompanied us for the performance and came to our rehearsals and to Ella Doran, Mrs. McAuliffe and Mrs. McCarthy who gave us loads of support on the night! We can't forget to thank Fr. John who rewarded all our hard work with a selection box for each member of the choir and of course The Three Tenors, who made us feel so welcome and entertained us for the night!
We were just fantastic! One of our parents captured the performance brilliantly!

Science Week 2018
6th Class attended an event in the library for Science Week. We examined a 3D printer and the design process involved in creating the final result. We also observed a laser cutting machine and some of the objects it had produced. We discussed the subjects in school which would be beneficial to choose, if we are considering working in the area in the future.
🎃👻Halloween 2018👻🎃
We are now officially half way through the term! 6th Class have made a fantastic start to the year and have impressed everyone in the school greatly with their leadership skills, maturity and hard work. Ms. O'Mara can't keep up with all the compliments we are receiving from adults in the school! We are in line for an exceptional year if we continue as we are! Enjoy the well deserved break 6th Class! |
Attendance
16 members of our class have missed no days of school this term! Well done! We hope to increase this number even further for the period after Halloween to Christmas. Our attendance percentage was 96.9%. Congratulations to Megan for winning the Homework Pass.
Any excuse to pose in Room 13 - Jersey Day!
Soccer Blitz in the Amenities
Thanks to Paul from Leixlip United for inviting us to take part in the blitz today. We entered two teams of 10 made up of representatives from the 5th and the 6th Classes. They were all superb and a credit to Scoil Mhuire!
Ag Obair sa Ghairdín!
Mrs. Daly kindly took us out this morning to work on the garden. We prepared some beds and planted garlic.
STEM Challenge
Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenge this week was to build the tallest free standing tower using masking tape and straws. We realised fairly fast that a secure base was required for height and a safe structure. Would our towers have stood the test of Storm Ali this week?
Student Council Elections
Our class coordinated the Student Council elections yesterday, the 19th of September. The elections were to appoint students as class representatives to the council for classes 3rd to 6th.
First, students had to mark their name off the voting register, before receiving their ballot paper to vote and finally they placed their vote in the ballot box.
That was only the beginning of the process, as 6th Class then had to tally the results using the quota system, as they do in elections in Ireland. We used the 'election day turn out' and the number of seats available to each class to help us calculate each quota. We redistributed the votes from the lowest candidates, in order for the highest candidates to reach their quotas.
It was a very successful day all round and we were praised numerous times for our thorough work in the polling station.
