Congrats 6th Class 2017!
Today marked the end of an era, as we said goodbye to a fantastic bunch of 6th Class students. As they were told today, they'll be greatly missed in Scoil Mhuire. Ms. O'Mara will find the landing very strange without them! We look forward to hearing wonderful things about them as the continue their journey through secondary school. Thank you to all the parents for your fantastic support all year and to the students for being brilliant in both 3rd and especially 6th Class! Enjoy the well deserved break! It's been a great year!
Student Teacher Basketball Match
We'll say the rain was the only victor in the student teacher basketball match, which had to be called off in the 3rd quarter. (The final picture shows the score up to that point however!) As always the teachers had height and a few fancy moves on their side! The students however demonstrated amazing skill and some fantastic shots on target, some of which just unfortunately circled the rim of the basket. Thanks to our ref Aisling who had the daunting task of controlling some boisterous players from both teams! A game of rock, paper, scissors at 3 o'clock crowned the students as the winners!
Soccer League
Today marked the final of the lunchtime soccer league organised by 6th Class. Borussia Dortmund were crowned victorious against the Real Madrid team. Both teams couldn't be separated after normal time, so our three sensible referees decided a penalty shoot out was the only way to go! With a final result of 2-1 on penalties, Borussia Dortmund received their medals. Well done to all who took part and to the organising committee for making it a very successful event!
Tidy Towns Presentation
Today we presented the cheque for €903 to Leixlip Tidy Town Association. This money was raised from the Cake Sale held on the 9th of June.
School Tour
We all had a fantastic time in Lilliput Adventure Centre today for our last ever school tour in Scoil Mhuire. We began the morning with some bog jumping and canoeing, followed by orienteering, a climbing wall, archery, aeroball, fun games and a capture the flag activity. We all left describing it as one of the best school tours ever! Thanks to the parents who gave up their day to accompany us also!
From the Archives ...
Listen to our younger selves reading 'Oh the Places You'll Go' when we were in 3rd class.
It becomes more apt as we prepare to leave Scoil Mhuire next week.

Sport's Day 2017
Today marked our final Sport's Day in Scoil Mhuire! We began the day with rounders, followed by the bouncy castle and races. Our final three activities were soccer, unihoc and basketball.
Awards Presentation
Well done to our 8 winners this morning at the awards presentation, celebrating sport in the three Green Lane schools! They consisted of winners and runners up from both the boys and the girls lunchtime leagues. We also had Scoil Mhuire's female Footballer of the Year and both Scoil Mhuire's male and female Overall Sportsperson of the Year in our midst. Well done to all! A great year of sport was had in Room 13. Hopefully they'll continue to represent their school in Coláiste Chiaráin next year! Thanks to Mr. Brangan for making this morning happen and for organising the leagues all year.
Fun Races - June Rewards
Fun races had us literally jumping for joy (as evident in the last pic) on Friday. Between races with balls, skipping ropes, balloons, sponges, water and blindfolds, we were kept busy! Some people's attempts at taming balloons will definitely live on in our memories long after 6th Class!
Running Event in the Amenities
Thanks to Ms. Dowling for organising another fantastic running day in the Amenities. We competed in trials last week to pick 16 students from both 6th Classes to attend the event. Six 6th Class students returned back to school with medals and our boys relay team were victorious after a very exciting chase to the finish. Well done to all who took part. It was a great morning on the running track!
Football Against The 5ths
This morning we enjoyed a friendly match against participants from the two 5th classes. Thanks to Ms. O'Driscoll for agreeing to our request to play and likewise to Ms. McCormack, who also reffed the match for us. We didn't come out victorious, despite an improved second half performance, but we demonstrated our usual positive mindset and determination and kept working as a team until the end. Well done to a strong 5th Class team!
General Knowledge Table Quiz
Today, the Student Council organised a General Knowledge Table Quiz in the hall for 1st to 3rd classes and another one for 4th to 6th classes. We helped out at the junior table quiz first, as it was many of the children's first time completing a table quiz. After lunch we had our opportunity to demonstrate our general knowledge in the senior quiz. We also had a round where we had to solve 12 dingbats. Some were very testing, as you'll see in one of the photos below. There was great excitement in the hall all day, especially when the Student Council presented prizes to the winning teams.
June Rewards
We continue to enjoy the June rewards we are earning daily to finish off the year!
So far we've had a night off homework, an ice-cream afternoon and we look forward to playing a football match against the 5th Classes on Wednesday.
Of course there are many more exciting activities yet to come our way!
Working hard all year is really paying off!! :)
Cake Sale
Today, the 9th of June, The Student Council and 6th Class held an extremely successful cake sale raising funds for Heart Children Ireland and Leixlip Tidy Towns. After a very quick count this evening, we were shocked and delighted to realise the final amount was over €1,800! Well done to all the children who worked in the hall today and in the corridor on the stalls. All were exceptional and their professionalism was praised by our many visitors to the hall. A massive thank you to everyone who brought treats to the hall very early this morning - staff, parents, grannies and grandads, students, the list goes on. Thanks to everyone who helped out in anyway today - those who provided decorations and t-shirts / bibs during the week, those who helped with the set-up and clear-up in the hall, those who made tea and sold raffle tickets, those who provided raffle prizes and of course all those who attended and gave so generously to two worthy causes!
The adult raffle prizes were announced this evening and a few remain to be collected on Monday. Some prizes from the children's raffle also remain uncollected in school, so there's still hope that you could be in with the chance to win these great prizes on Monday! Don't throw out your raffle tickets just yet!
We look forward to announcing the final total next week! Well done to all involved!

Cake Sale
6th Class & The Student Council are organising a cake sale this Friday, the 9th of June, for 'Leixlip Tidy Towns' and 'Heart Children Ireland'. Please donate buns, cakes and treats to the hall on Friday from 08:30. The earlier the better! Don't forget to have a few Euro to make some purchases also.
Weaving Dreamcatchers in Art
Blast from the Past!
Thanks to the students in Ms. O'Donnell's room who bought us in these old pictures from Junior Infants. They were printed in the Liffey Champion in May 2010. We had great fun today trying to spot everyone in the pictures. Some of us haven't changed at all!
Electricity in Science
Today we studied electricity in Science. We began the lesson by constructing a circuit to ensure a bulb would light. Once we had mastered the basics, we were set the challenge to make a quiz, where we could match items on the right, with those on the left. Some of us chose to match languages with their countries, computer games with their consoles and famous people with their roles. We wired up the quiz on the back of the card, so our classmates could attempt the quizzes on the front. They held two crocodile clips on the items they thought matched and if their answers were successful, the bulb lit up! We hope to get to try the rest of the quizzes tomorrow in class.
Orienteering
Today we completed a very competitive orienteering task in P.E. We put ourselves into groups and searched for clues around the school building. We then had to decode the words and letters to makes sentences and phrases. No group was exact in their findings. We may have to re-challenge ourselves next week!
Preparing for Secondary School
We've had a very exciting time this week preparing for secondary school. On Wednesday we received a talk from Leixlip Youth Group, who discussed our transition to secondary school and attempted to ease any worries we had. We all gave some very mature answers to how we should approach life at second level.
We also received an invite this week to visit Coláiste Chiaráin, where most of our class are attending next year. We met the vice-principal, our future year head, the chaplain and many more teachers. We observed many of the classrooms and facilities in the school. A big thanks to the 'Gluais Team' for taking the time to show us around. We got a great taste for what's ahead of us in 1st Year!

Declan O'Toole Poetry Competition
We've completed our poems for the poetry competition and they are currently on display on the school corridor. We look forward to hearing from the judges in a few weeks.
Drama
We had a great time at our first drama workshop with Marie today.
We look forward to taking part again next week!

Lunchtime League Final
There was very friendly rivalry in Room 13 today, as Antrim took on Sligo in the final of the Lunchtime League, with the reds being crowned the champions. Well done to all who played, especially the four girls from our room, who took part in the competition for their last year in Scoil Mhuire.
Skipping Workshop
We thoroughly enjoyed our skipping workshop with John during Active School Week. We learned various tips and tricks and showed some of them to our peers in the show at the end of the day. We saw some expert skills from the other classes as well, which we'll have to attempt ourselves!
Active Week - Thursday
We met up with our old friends, Ms. O'Grady's Class, for some fun and games for Active Week.
Library Visit - Technology Week
We were invited to Leixlip Library for a Digital Workshop to celebrate Technology Week. We saw a 3D printer in action, examined objects made from a laser and saw a 3D scan of our teacher and two of our classmates being made.
Active School Week - Wednesday
This morning, Ms. Dowling led a morning run for students, parents and staff. There was a great turn out!
Active School Week - Tuesday
Today we received confirmation of our donation to 'Make a Wish'
Active School Week - Marathon Monday
Our first challenge of Active School week was to run a Marathon as a class. Some of our class measured the yard a few weeks ago to discover that it measures 166m. This meant that as a class in order to complete a marathon, we needed to run 252 laps. We decided to challenge ourselves further and get the boys to complete a marathon and the girls to complete one also.
We had 13 boys present, so they needed to complete 19 laps and 11 girls present, so they needed to complete 22 laps each.
We did even better than that! After 40 mins, the boys managed a huge 383 laps (A marathon and a 1/2) of the yard in total. This was followed by the girls with 266 laps.
The four boys below managed to run 42 laps in total each and the four girls below managed to complete 32 laps each!
Well done to all! Teacher could only watch in awe!

Charity Donation
Our class raised an exceptional €304.50 for the charity 'Make a Wish' with donations from our Confirmation money.
In February we compiled a list of various charities and agreed they all do exceptional work. After a class vote, we settled on the 'Make a Wish Foundation'. On the 24th of April, Mary Quille from the charity came to tell us about all the wonderful work the charity does, granting wishes for sick children. We presented the cheque to her on the day and she thanked us for our very kind donation. |
The Big Egg-Drop
Ms. O'Mara set us a challenge on the Thursday before the holidays to create a protective case for an egg. We worked in groups of 3's and 4's, accepted the challenge enthusiastically and set about planning our designs. Friday came, and with some ammunition from home, we returned to our groups to form our contraptions. We used cardboard, bubble wrap, masking tape, cotton wool, balloons, plastic bags, bottles, blankets, cushions and would you believe, popcorn, to try and guard our delicate object.
With the help of Pat on the roof, we were left with 5 survivors, but sadly 4 casualties. |

3D Letters in Art
We began this project a few weeks ago, by cutting out a template of the first letter of our names. We had to trace a second copy of this and tape them together with masking tape, putting plastic cups in between, to create the 3D effect. Once secured with the tape, we used a glue/water mixture and newspaper to cover the letters. One kind individual in our class painted all the letters white for us as a base coat. After that, we were free to paint our letters any way we liked!
Intercultural Day
Today, the 31st of March, we had Intercultural Day in Scoil Mhuire for the 2nd year. Our class chose New Zealand as our country to study and spent the last few weeks learning the Haka, which we preformed on the stage at assembly. Before assembly, 4 members of our class walked in a parade representing the nationalities in our school. The rest of us cheered on our classmates and enjoyed the atmosphere. Thanks to Fr. Eladius & Mrs. Onyejkwe, who both taught us a little about African culture on the day also.
|
Here we are at one of our run-throughs in the hall, in preparation for the assembly. |
We also learned about Solids, Liquids & Gases in Science today and enjoyed some coke floats to finish off the day!
Drumming Workshop
It's fair to say we very much enjoyed the drumming workshop in school today.
We discussed various musical terms such as tempo, rhythm and polyrhythms.
Check out the videos and photos below to get an insight into the workshop.

Sheila O'Hora Annual Art Competition
For the last number of weeks, the school corridors have been lined with lots of wonderful artwork. Ms. O'Grady announced the winners of the annual competition, in memory of former teacher Ms. O'Hora, last Friday at assembly. A teacher from Scoil Bhríde kindly gave her free time to judge the competition.
A student in our class received a special mention for her painting 'My Holiday Paintings' and was awarded a new set of colours. We were delighted to have the overall winner of the competition in our class also. Her painting was entitled 'All Around the World'. She received an engraved plaque and her painting will be framed and put on display outside the office. Well done to both students on their achievement!

Science - Preserving Food
We learned that microbes in food can multiply when they are exposed to warmth, oxygen, moisture or time. We realised that there are various ways to preserve food, depending on the food in question. Some methods are: drying, salting, canning, refrigerating, freezing, boiling, sugaring and eating before the sell-by date.
We then took an apple and some yoghurt and experimented with some of these methods. We plan on leaving the containers for a few days, before we examine them again. Overall, we predict that the apple in the fridge will preserve the best, along with the yoghurt. We expect the salting, sugaring and drying methods to be the least successful at preserving the items we chose.

Film - Book Club 'Holes'
For the last few months, 6th Class have been reading and responding to the novel 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. As part of the film-book club, Leixlip Library then invited us up to watch the film version of 'Holes'.
Seachtain na Gaeilge - Lá Glas agus Céilí Mór
Bhí Lá Glas againn ar an 9ú lá de Mhárta, chun Seachtain na Gaeilge a cheiliúradh. Tháinig Ms. O'Sullivan ar ais don chéilí ar an lá céanna agus mhúin sí cúpla rince dúinn. Bhaineamar sár taitneamh as ár gcéilí deireanach i Scoil Mhuire agus táimid fíor bhuíoch de Ms. O'Sullivan a chaith an lá linn arís i Scoil Mhuire!
Seachtain na Gaeilge - Tráth na gCeist
Bhí ár dtráth na gceist bliantúil againn ar an 8ú Márta. Tháinig rang a 3, 4, 5 & 6 le chéile don tráthnóna. Bhí 30 foireann ann, le páiste ó na ranganna uilig orthu. Fuaireamar pointe amháin le haghaidh freagra as Béarla, ach dhá phointe le haghaidh freagra as Gaeilge. Bhí babhta ann faoi spórt, tíreolaíocht, stair, ár scoil agus faoi cheol agus pictiúir freisin. Bhaineamar taitneamh as an tráthnóna agus bhí an-sceitimíní orainn nuair a bhí Ms. O'Mara ag glaoch amach na buaiteoirí!
Confirmation
Congratulations to the boys and girls who made their Confirmation yesterday.
They were exemplary on the day and did their parents, their teacher and the school very proud. All those who had jobs to do, performed them to perfection and every child showed their maturity and their understanding of the importance of the day. The ceremony was very enjoyable and all the children commented on how nice Bishop Field was. He definitely made it a day to remember.
Praise must be given also to the 3 children who didn't make their Confirmation, but gave us such support in the weeks leading up to the sacrament. Thanks to all those in the parish and the school who helped us prepare for the day.
On Friday, we came to school in our own clothes for photographs and had our own mini photoshoot in the classroom!
Again, well done to the whole class for their efforts over the last few weeks and they should enjoy the well deserved break over midterm!

We are very excited in 6th Class to be making our Confirmation tomorrow, the 16th of February. Bishop Field will be joining us, along with the priests of the parish, to celebrate the sacrament with us. We have been preparing for months and look forward to receiving the Holy Spirit tomorrow in the company of our classmates, families and the parish community. |
Maths with Izak9
We worked in groups using the cubes from Izak9 to solve various mathematical problems. Some of the problems included equations, prime numbers and magic squares. We tried to be the first group finished to represent our answers using the cubes.

Zeeko Internet Survey
In preparation for an upcoming talk by 'Zeeko' on internet safety, we were invited to complete an online survey. The survey asked us about our knowledge of the internet and our internet usage. The results will be compiled and analysed before their visit on the 7th of March.
Printing
We used styrofoam sheets to carve a design and print onto paper using paint.
Beginning the week with some Gymnastics!

🎄Happy Holidays🎄
Well done to all the boys and girls in room 13 for a fantastic 1st term in 6th Class. They've shown themselves to be excellent leaders and hopefully they'll continue to act as role models for the younger classes in the new year. We'll have a busy few weeks ahead of us when we return in January, as we prepare to make our Confirmation on the 16th of February. We'll have our Pre-Confirmation mass on the 21st of January also.
They've all worked extremely hard this term and deserve the well earned break for the next few weeks. I look forward to seeing them refreshed and ready for some more hard work on the 9th of January. Enjoy the holidays! |

Final of the Lunchtime League
There was great competition in Room 13 on the day of the holidays, as three of our boys battled it out on the pitch to see who would become the 'Lunchtime League Champions 2016'. Well done to our two boys, who won the title, on a team made up of students from 4th Class-6th Class from the three Green Lane schools.
Thanks to Mr. Brangan for organising a very enjoyable league for the boys.

MONDAY FUN-DAY
Water & Filtration
We are currently studying 'Water' in Science and examined the process of filtration on Friday. As you can see, we began by mixing up a very dirty mixture of soil and stones. (Jars 2 & 4) We then created a filter, by placing cotton wool, sand, large stones and filter paper into a funnel. (Jars 1 & 3) We had to resist the temptation to drink our newly filtered water, but we were very impressed with how clear the water appeared after the process! |

Jersey Day for GOAL
Student Council Elections!
Wednesday the 12th of October became Student Council Election Day in Scoil Mhuire. Students from 3rd Class to 6th Class were invited to cast their votes in room 13. Any student who wished to put themselves forward for election and get their name on the ballot paper, was asked to hand a nomination form to Ms. O'Mara before last Friday. Each nomination form had to be supported by an adult and another student of Scoil Mhuire.
6th Class also had the opportunity to put themselves forward for the positions of Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary & Treasurer. The staff had a very difficult decision to make in appointing students to these roles and were overwhelmed with the exceptional written applications received. The four positions were finally filled after interviews with the candidates. As always, well done to all students who put themselves forward for such roles in Scoil Mhuire. Keep an eye on the website to see what the Student Council gets up to during their first term in office! |
Room 13 became a 'Polling Station'
|
Every student who entered room 13, first had their name checked on the register, before receiving their ballot paper to vote.
The slideshow above shows 3rd Class to 6th Class making the very difficult decision of who to elect in the various classes, before casting their votes.
Student Council Reminder - Deadline Dates
Science - The Brain
We spent the last two weeks studying 'The Brain' in Science and discovered that the brain controls all of our movements. We learned that the left hand side of our brain controls the right side of our body and vice versa. We realised that new pathways are created to our brains all the time and this is what makes it possible to learn new things.
We also learned a few tips to improve our learning:
1. A good night's sleep is necessary every night
2. Have a healthy diet - including breakfast every morning before school and a healthy lunch in school
3. Stay hydrated (Even if Ms. O'Mara complains about bottles sometimes!)
4. That stress doesn't help learning, so you're better off staying calm and relaxed
5. Challenge yourself with puzzles, reading, playing computer games, drawing or playing instruments

Harvesting Our Crops
Mrs. Daly, our garden expert, visited us today to help us harvest our courgettes, cucumbers and carrots from last year. We even got to taste the carrots and cucumbers in class and some of us brought home the courgettes to experiment with in the kitchen!
Thanks again to Mrs. Daly for taking the time to share her gardening knowledge with us in Scoil Mhuire! We had a great morning in the garden.
